Processuality in interaction

The synthesis group Processuality in Interaction investigates how interactions between people develop and evolve dynamically. The focus is on the often unconscious way in which conversation partners adapt their communication to each other. The interdisciplinary team of scientists is researching to understand how people build up a deep and shared understanding during a conversation, for example of content, common goals and pre-existing knowledge - a so-called "common ground". This common basis of understanding is of central importance for successful communication and effective cooperation. However, although it is already possible to measure the "common ground", for example using methods from dynamic systems theory, it remains unclear how exactly this foundation is formed and which mechanisms contribute to further progress in meaning construction and interaction based on it. Accordingly, one of the group's main objectives is to better identify these interaction dynamics and model them for adaptive systems.

In their research, the scientists use several key phenomena of interpersonal communication, including

  • Common Ground: The shared knowledge base that interlocutors develop in the course of interaction.
  • Alignment: The adaptation of language and behavior to enable smooth communication.
  • Interpersonal Synergy: The synergy effects that result from the interaction of the conversation partners.

Previous findings show that people in conversations do not only refer to what has happened immediately before, but rather to a growing shared history of interaction. This historical dimension of communication enables adaptation and synergy between the conversation partners. Finally, the working group deals with the question of what other ways there are to assess the quality of change in a dialog, apart from time and individual contributions.
