Publication on the understanding of algorithms

Professor Dr Tobias Matzner (B03/B06) has published a new book titled "Algorithms: Technology, Culture, Politics". It takes a balanced approach to understanding algorithms by examining their relationship to hardware, code, data and various subjects such as users and programmers. It discusses critical issues such as bias and responsibility while offering insights into modern technologies such as self-driving cars and GPT.

"The current discussion about algorithms is divided into two groups: on the one hand, cultural and political issues are narrowed down to technical aspects. On the other, there is a relatively abstract discussion of how ‘AI’ or ‘algorithms’ have social and political implications. The book combines both perspectives, the social, cultural and political issues on the one hand and the necessary technical detail on the other," explains Prof. Dr Tobias Matzner.

The book is aimed at anyone involved in social sciences, media studies, STS, political theory or philosophy, and serves as an introduction to more than two decades of critical research on algorithms.
