PhD visiting fellowship at the Constructing Explainability Project, University of Paderborn and Bielefeld University

The interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Center Constructing Explainability (TRR 318), combines activities at the Universities of Paderborn and Bielefeld (Germany) and invites expressions of interest for PhD visiting fellowships.

Our Center brings together an interdisciplinary community of scientists, who work in the fields of computer science, linguistics, psychology, sociology, media studies, philosophy, and more. The research is concerned with explainable AI by focusing on the processes through which explanations are co-constructed and how they could be implemented in algorithmic decision-making itself.

We invite PhD researchers working on topics relevant to the project to spend time in Bielefeld or Paderborn as visiting fellows. We offer up-to-date equipment, labs, access to University Library services, and participation in all activities related to the project, such as reading groups, workshops, conferences, lectures, etc. The fellowship comes with a budget to cover your travel and lodging expenses. If you choose to stay in Paderborn, we can also provide you with office space in the new office buildings at Zukunftsmeile 2, close to the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn, one of the largest computer museums in the world.

Please send us your expression of interest including your academic CV, affiliation, and a brief description of the activities you will undertake while visiting us. Please, include a mention of which of our subprojects you would like to be affiliated with.

Doctoral candidates in any discipline at any accredited university worldwide working on topics relevant to the project are eligible to apply.

We accept applications on a rolling basis.

You should plan to conclude your visit by mid-November 2025.

Please, send your expression of interest and any questions you might have to: rtg@trr318.uni-paderborn.de
