Decoding the Disciplines (RTG)

Decoding and overcoming misunderstandings and irritations in interdisciplinary teams with the “Decoding the Disciplines” approach.

As doctoral students, you are experts in your discipline, which means that some of your previously explicit knowledge has been condensed and internalised. Content, concepts, definitions and methods are now interrelated as a matter of course. This kind of expertness shapes the communication and interaction in different subject cultures, but often becomes an obstacle in interdisciplinary contexts.

In this workshop, you will reflect on your own subject culture as a systematic connection of patterns of perception, values, thinking and action. You will acquire the basics of open questioning, paraphrasing and of de-escalating communication. You will use the “Decoding the disciplines” approach to analyse difficulties in understanding / misunderstandings (bottlenecks) between cooperation partners from different disciplines. The aim is to generate mutual understanding and approaches to solutions for such bottlenecks in the so-called "decoding conversation".

Dr. Britta Foltz is a member of staff at the Center for University Didactics, a lecturer and Vice Dean of the Department of Civil Engineering at Aachen University of Applied Sciences.
